1886 N370 Lone Jack Cigarettes Welsh
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $4,700.00
Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Exceedingly rare sample card of Curtis Welsh from the Lone Jack Cigarettes series. The Lone Jack set, issued by the Lone Jack Cigarette Company of Lynchburg, Virginia, features portraits of the 1886 Brownie Champs. The thirteen-card set actually uses the very same portraits as appear in the N172 Old Judge Brownie Champ series, but cropped more closely, and with advertising for Lone Jack Cigarettes surrounding the players' portraits in the background. Their unusual design and great rarity distinguish them as one of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century baseball issues. Lone Jacks have a similarity to Old Judges, but have no direct connection to Goodwin, and may have been regionally issued only in Virginia. This is a very attractive example with superb photo quality. This card is crisp and clean. The back damage on the blank reverse, from long ago being glued into a scrapbook and carefully removed, is largely responsible for the extremely harsh grade assigned by SGC. Aside from a tiny surface chip in the lower left corner, the front of the card is in Excellent condition. Lone Jacks are so rare that a complete set has never been assembled. This is an extremely attractive sample from this very rare pre-1900 tobacco set. The card is accompanied by an original "Lone Jack Smoking Tobacco" wrapper (Vg-Ex). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
