1912 E300 Plow's Candy Chief Myers (Meyers)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,175.00
Graded EX 60 by SGC. A very attractive high-grade sample card of Chief Myers (Meyers) from the extremely elusive 1912 Plow’s Candy issue. It is interesting to note that Meyers' name is misspelled as "Myers" on this card. This unusual sepia toned, large format (3 x 4 inches) candy issue was not even known to exist until the 1960s, and is among the rarest candy cards of the era. The offered example is exceptionally crisp and conservatively graded. The card displays four sharp corners showing just a hint of wear, flawless image clarity, and a perfectly clean blank back. The image has a slight tilt, which gives the card the appearance of being off-center. If not for the tilt the card would have near perfect centering (slightly off top to bottom, approximately 40/60). Meyers was the Giants regular catcher from 1909 to 1915, during which time he handled one of the top pitching staffs in baseball led by the incomparable Christy Mathewson and fellow future Hall of Famer Rube Marquard. That period also marked one of the most successful eras in Giants team history as the club captured three consecutive pennants from 1911-1913. Coincidentally, Meyers would also enjoy his three finest seasons those years as well, hitting .332, .358, and .312, respectively. Meyers was traded to Brooklyn in 1916 and finished his career in 1917 with a .291 lifetime batting average. This is a very significant and substantial sample-card rarity in magnificent high grade. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
