1887 N690-1 Kalamazoo Bats Double-Player Cabinet Card - Stovey & Milligan
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,875.00
Double-player 1887 Kalamazoo Bats cabinet card of Harry Stovey (Stowe) and Jocko Milligan. This card presents an extremely unusual image which is strikingly different from that of any other card. The photograph is taken from behind the catcher, Milligan, with Stovey at bat. It is interesting to note that because of the unusual vantage point and the incredible quality of the Kalamazoo Bats photography, not only is a unique double-player pose presented by this card, but uniform details of the era that are almost never seen are captured with precision (back of the shoes, back of the hat, back pocket, and belt loop design, etc). The photographer's backdrop is easily seen and also very interesting. These backdrops are usually reserved for indoor use to provide the illusion of being outdoors, yet from the foreground of the photo it is clear that the ballplayers actually are outside. This is the only Kalamazoo Bats cabinet card example of Stovey and Milligan we have ever seen. This is also a particularly rare subject in the standard N690 Kalamazoo Bats series. The names of players are neatly identified on the reverse (Stovey in ink, Milligan in pencil); the cabinet card is otherwise in Ex to Ex-Mt condition. The oval Charles Gross & Company stamp appears in the lower portion of the photograph. Dimensions: 4.25 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
