1915 E145 Cracker Jack #88 Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,643.75

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Exceptionally attractive, bright, and clean example of what many consider to be the most classic of all Christy Mathewson cards. This is a tremendous Excellent condition card with much stronger eye appeal than suggested by its technically accurate PSA grade. This card is centered slightly to the left (40/60 left to right), with outstanding color, perfect registration, an extremely bold red background, and just the slightest hint of wear to each corner. If not for the light caramel staining, we believe this card would grade a solid EX-MT 6. The card certainly has a Ex-Mt appearance, and would be a very welcome addition to any high-quality collection of Cracker Jack, Christy Mathewson, or Hall of Fame cards. According to the PSA Population report, a PSA EX 5 Cracker Jack of Mathewson is actually more difficult to find than a PSA NM 7 or PSA NM-MT 8 example (a very unusual and rare condition population curve for any vintage set, the result of higher grade cards surviving due to the issuing of factory sets). This is a very rarely offered and extremely desirable grade for this classic card, providing a relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive super high-grade example, without compromising on all of the most important qualities of the card. It is always interesting to see quality 1915 Cracker Jacks that have obviously come from boxes of Cracker Jacks, as is the case with this example, as opposed to from factory sets. SMR value is a conservative $1,300. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
