Complete set of 1916 M101-4 Sporting News, missing just two cards for completion (#87 Jackson and #151 Ruth, both of which are offered as separate lots in this auction). This is the finest set M101-4 set we have ever seen and the #1 All -Time Finest Set on the PSA Registry. All 198 cards have been encapsulated and graded by PSA (except one #94 Kauff). The 1916 M101-4 set is one of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball card sets of the era. The set is commonly referred to as issued by The Sporting News , but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies, including and most prominently The Sporting News . Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank banks. Collectors traditionally refer to blank-backed M101-4s as issued by The Sporting News . The M101-4 "Sporting News" set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball card issues. Very few complete sets exist. This is the only completely PSA-graded M101-4 Sporting News set (minus two cards) ever assembled. This is a world-class set of one of the most important and rarely offered of all prewar baseball card sets, including all the top stars of the day. This set is loaded with highlights, including thirty-two Hall of Famers (including Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Nap Lajoie, Casey Stengel, Walter Johnson, etc), extremely desirable key cards of "Black Sox" players (Eddie Cicotte, Hap Felsch, Chick Gandil, and Buck Weaver), and many other key and star cards. The condition is extraordinary. Condition Composite: The set includes forty-seven PSA 8s, ninety PSA 7s, thirty-nine PSA 6s, nine PSA 5s, six VG-EX 4s, two VG 3s, and four GOOD 2s. The PSA registry overall weighted GPA rating is 6.55. The cards, as well as the grades, speak for themselves. This is an extraordinary set. The PSA grading report is as follows: Forty-seven NM-MT 8: #8, 19, 21, 27, 28 Carey, 29, 32 Cicotte (Black Sox), 33, 44 (OC), 45 (OC), 49, 67, 70, 71, 73, 78, 84 Hooper, 90 Jennings, 95, 96, 97 Lajoie, 102, 106, 109 (OC), 114, 121 (OC), 122 (OC), 123, 128, 129, 134, 135, 136, 137, 144 Robinson, 145, 146 Roush, 149, 152, 154 Schalk, 157, 158, 169 Stengel, 188 Wheat (OC), 189, 198, and 200 (last card in set).
