1887 N690-1 Kalamazoo Bats Cabinet Card - Seward
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,993.75
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Presented is an extremely rare Kalamazoo Bats cabinet card of A's pitcher Ed Seward. This is an extraordinary example, with flawless contrast, and with tremendous detail, highlighting the Philadelphia ballpark's grandstands in the background, which is one of the trademark characteristics of Kalamazoo Bats. Perfectly clean on the front, with an unimprovable image. Extraordinarily bold and crisp. We sent this one example (of the four in the auction) in to SGC to see how it would look in a holder, and we have to say it looks extremely impressive. This is the only Kalamazoo Bats cabinet card example of Seward we have ever seen. Seward is also a particularly rare subject in the standard Kalamazoo Bats series; only one example is known, which surfaced only several years ago and was a new addition to the checklist. This card has been harshly downgraded by SGC due to the player’s name and a number written in ink on the reverse, a flaw which we do not find particularly serious. There is a very small surface chip in the extreme lower left corner of the mount. We grade this cabinet card overall Excellent with identification notations on reverse. Dimensions: 4.25 x 6.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
