1926-1947 Babe Ruth Large-Format Premium Card Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,292.50
Three unusual Babe Ruth premium cards from three different issuers, spanning the years 1926 to 1947, as follows: 1) 1926 M101-7 Sporting News Supplement. These large (7 x 10 inches) sepia-toned player photos were issued as a weekly supplement by The Sporting News . There are few issues featuring Ruth dating from the 1920s. The offered example has a one-inch tear at the top border, but is otherwise in Excellent condition. 2) 1933 R309-1 Goudey Premium. The key card from this very substantial high-quality premium set which was available only by mail in exchange for Goudey Gum wrappers. Printed on thick cardboard stock, R309-1s are designed with a foldout cardboard easel attachment on the reverse, which allows the card to stand on its own for display. The easel attachment on this example is complete and intact, and has never been folded. Two staple holes on the top border strongly suggest this otherwise gem Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt example originates directly from the files of Goudey (it is almost certainly from The Great Goudey Find of 1969 and was the Goudey file copy); aside from tiny staple holes the condition is far better than normal for this classic premium. 3) 1947 NBC Radio Premium. This unusual premium (6 x 9 inches) was issued by DuPont and NBC Radio to help promote NBC’s popular broadcast Cavalcade of America , which was a long-running biographical series. The black-and-white image displays the legendary “Bambino” in his classic swing-thru pose. The reverse of the card features a message from the sponsors at the top and a list of fifty-four of Ruth’s records, which were compiled courtesy of The Sporting News. The premium is in Nr/Mt condition. Three rather unusual large-format Babe Ruth cards, two dating from his playing days, and the third issued in 1947. Total 3 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
