1930s "Shoebox" Baseball and Non-Sport Gum Card Collection (426)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,525.00

Collection of 426 cards from seven different classic 1930s baseball and nonsport gum issues (plus one 1960s issue), including sixty 1934-1936 Diamond Star baseball cards (#1 thru 60) highlighted by twenty-four Hall of Famers. Each card in this collection has the original owner's initials "JWB" neatly scripted in ink on the back (a small number with the owner's name "J. Barber" signed on reverse). Aside from this flaw, the nonsport cards range in grade from Good to Excellent condition, averaging Vg+ overall, with approximately equal representation at each grade level, and the baseball cards grade slightly but noticeably stronger, ranging from Gd to Ex-Mt, and averaging Vg-Ex. This is a classic "shoebox" collection which has remained completely intact and untouched in the family of the original owner since they were carefully put away for safe keeping decades ago. Most "shoebox" collections tend to be either baseball or nonsport, while this collection includes both nonsport (366 cards) and baseball (60 cards) for a total of 426 cards. The collection consists of: 1) 1934 to 1936 R327 Diamond Stars (60 cards, #1-60): Keys (all grades are without reference to original owner's initials on reverse): #1 Grove (Gd), 2 Simmons (Vg), 3 Maranville (Vg), 9 Cochrane (Ex), 11 Dickey (Gd), 14 Terry (Vg-Ex), 16 Waner (Ex), 17 Frisch (Ex), 18 Hafey (Vg-Ex), 27 Traynor (Ex), 28 Lopez (Ex), 29 Rolfe (Ex), 30 Manush (Vg-Ex), 31 Cuyler (Ex), 32 Rice (Vg to Vg-Ex), 35 Averill (Vg), 36 Lombardi (Ex), 39 Hubbell (Vg-Ex/Ex), 43 Lyons (Ex-Mt), 44 Hornsby (Ex), 48 Ferrell (Ex), 50 Ott (Ex), 54 Greenberg (Ex-Mt), 59 Bottomley (Vg-Ex/Ex), and 60 Ruffing (Ex). 2) 1933 R73 Goudey "Indian Gum" (112 cards): Series of 24 (3 cards); Series of 48 (red, 10 cards); Series of 48 (blue, 3 cards); Series of 96 (51 cards); Series of 192 (37 cards); and Series of 216 (8 cards). 104 different cards of the 216 in the set. 3) 1933 R136 National Chicles "Sky Birds" (96 cards, low number run #1-96): "Series of 48": #1-25, 26-37; "Series of 144": #25, 38-96. 4) R172 Gum Inc. "Wild West Series" (complete set of 48): Missing only the impossible #25 premium card. 5) R78 "Jungle Gum" (24 cards). 6) R109 Gum Inc. "Pirate's Picture Bubble Gum" (33 cards). 7) R135-1 Package Confectionary Co. "Beautiful Ships" (14 cards). 8) 1960 Fleer Spins and Needles Partial Set (33 of 80 in the set plus six duplicates, total 39): Nr/Mt overall. Note: The 1960 Fleer cards do not have initials on reverse. Fun, fascinating, and very substantial original owner collection of 1930s gum cards including sixty baseball. Total 426 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
