1887 N172 Old Judge Mike "King" Kelly - Batting
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,527.50
A very attractive example of 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly (bat at 45 degrees pose), identified as "$10,000 Kelly" with "Chicago" on his jersey. Kelly earned his nickname when he was sold from Chicago to Boston following the 1886 season for the then unheard of sum of $10,000. This has always been one of our favorite Kelly cards, in part because of the elaborate background, and in part because of the pose. This example has been encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC due to an imperceptible trim, apparently along the bottom border. This is a very attractive card with an approximately Vg/Vg-Ex appearance. It is bright and clean, with superb photo quality, centered slightly to the left, and with a few extremely insignificant stains on the reverse. This is a very attractive example of one of the most striking cards in the Old Judge set of the legendary Mike "King" Kelly. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
