1939 Play Ball Complete Set (161)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,525.00
Complete set of 1939 Play Balls issued by Gum, Inc., with 62% ranging from Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few Ex-Mt and Nr/Mt), 38% Vg. This was the first of three major baseball card sets by Gum, Inc., and this landmark set includes Ted Williams’ rookie card, Joe DiMaggio, and all of the other major stars and Hall of Famers of the era. The rarer high-number series cards (#116-162) in 1939 Play Ball have always made the assembly of a complete set particularly challenging for collectors. Seventeen cards including DiMaggio and Williams have been graded by PSA or GAI. Low Numbers (#1-115): 60% Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few Ex-Mt and Nr/Mt), 40% Vg. Keys: #1 Powell (Vg), 3 Ruffing (80/20 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 6 Durocher (85/15 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 7 Doerr (Vg), 26 Joe DiMaggio (GAI VG-EX+ 4.5, well centered example, with square corners, and a bright, crisp image), 30 Dickey (Vg), 39 Ferrell (GAI EX 5), 48 Gomez (Vg), 50 Gehringer (PSA EX-MT 6), 51 Ott (PSA VG-EX 4), 53 Hubbell (GAI EX 5), 55 Vaughan (Vg-Ex), 56 Greenberg (30/70 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), 82 Klein (Ex), 89 L. Waner (Ex-Mt), 92 Ted Williams RC (PSA VG 3, centered 70/30 L/R, with light surface wear, evenly rounded corners, and no creases), 94 Manush (Ex-Mt), 103 Berg (GAI EX-MT 6), 112 P. Waner (70/30 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex). High Numbers (#116-162): 67% range from Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few Ex-Mt), 33% Vg. Key: #143 Averill (Vg-Ex). Ten common cards have been graded by PSA: #60 EX-MT 6, 62 NM 7 (OC), 63 EX 5, 66 EX 5, 99 NM 7, 102 NM 7, 105 NM 7, 106 EX 5, 129 EX 5, and 136 EX-MT 6. While 1939 Play Balls are numbered #1 thru 162, no #126 was ever issued, making the set complete at 161 cards. 1939 Play Balls are rarely offered as a complete set. This is a very attractive set in an extremely desirable grade which offers an outstanding value, and represents a relatively affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this classic prewar gum issue. Total 161 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
