1940 Play Ball Complete Set (240)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $9,987.50
Presented is an outstanding, rarely offered, and extremely consistent complete set of the classic 1940 Play Ball set issued by Gum, Inc., with tremendous eye appeal throughout. With all the Hall of Famers, current and past, and rare high-number series cards (#181 thru 240), the number of noteworthy cards in this set rivals the number of common cards. This is a very impressive and fairly high grade set. 1940 Play Ball has always been a difficult set, with a rarity that has been underappreciated in complete-set form. It is also a set that has become even rarer in complete form in recent years, in part due to its extraordinary break value, and the inclusion of several particularly high value key cards (among them Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Joe Jackson, all three of which are in Excellent condition in this set). This is a beautiful set. Fifteen cards have been graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (SGC EX 60 Perfectly centered, with four square corners showing a hint of wear, and a clean reverse with bold black text), 6 Gomez (Vg-Ex/Ex), 7 Dickey (Vg/Ex/Ex), 10 Ruffing (Vg-Ex/Ex), 21 Ferrell (tiny flake of paper loss on the top edge, otherwise Ex), 27 Williams (SGC EX 60 Popular second-year card is centered slightly to the right border, with a perfectly clean image of the “Splendid Splinter”), 30 Berg (Ex-Mt), 38 Doerr (SGC NM 84), 40 Greenberg (SGC EX+ 70), 41 Gehringer (tiny surface scratch near the upper right edge, otherwise EX-Mt), 46 Averill (Ex), 87 Hubbell (Vg-Ex/Ex), 88 Ott (SGC EX+ 70), 102 Klein (SGC NM 84), 104 P. Waner (80/20 T/B, otherwise EX), 105 L. Waner (SGC NM 84), 107 Vaughan (Vg-Ex/Ex), 118 Hoyt (tiny tear on the left border, otherwise Ex), 119 Alexander (Vg-Ex/Ex), 120 Johnson (Vg), 124 Combs (70/30 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 129 Harris (10/90 L/R, otherwise Ex), 132 Mack (SGC EX+ 70), 133 Foxx (no left border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 134 Cronin (Ex), 141 Stengel (Ex), 142 Kelly (Ex), 153 McKechnie (20/80 T/B, otherwise Ex), 158 T. Jackson (Vg-Ex), 167 Frisch (Vg-Ex/Ex), 168 Wagner (SGC EX/NM 80), 170 Speaker (SGC NM 84), 171 Heilmann (Vg/Vg-Ex), 172 Bender (ink mark on the back, otherwise Nr/Mt), 173 Lajoie (SGC EX/NM 80), 174 Evers (Ex-Mt), 175 Mathewson (virtually no left border, otherwise Ex), 176 Manush (Ex), 177 Baker (Vg-Ex/Ex), 178 Carey (Vg), 179 Sisler (slight trim, otherwise Nr/Mt), 180 Cochrane (Ex), 223 Jennings (ink on bottom edge, otherwise Vg), 224 Traynor (ink stamp on back, otherwise Ex/Ex-Mt), 225 “Shoeless” Joe Jackson (SGC EX 60 The card displays honest light corner wear, with a brilliant image, and centered slightly to the left. Very nice card!), 226 Hooper (Vg/Vg-Ex), 227 Haines (Vg-Ex), 230 Faber (SGC NM 84), 232 Goslin (slight trim, otherwise Nr/Mt), 234 Chance (Vg), 235 McGraw (SGC EX/NM 80), 236 Bottomley (slight trim, otherwise Ex-Mt), 237 Keeler (Vg), and 238 Lazzeri (Ex-Mt). One common card #76 has been graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. The balance of the cards grade 83% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), and 17% Vg. Technically the set falls into the “very strong medium” grade category, but has an overall presentation of a technically much more expensive and higher-grade set. It would be hard to imagine any collector looking at this set and thinking anything but “Wow!” Early sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the fifteen SGC graded cards (not including the 225 ungraded cards) is $5,530. Total 240 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000+. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
