1941 Play Ball Complete Set: #7 PSA Registry (72)

Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $21,150.00

Extremely high-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues, highlighted by what are among the most desirable cards of many of the era’s key stars, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Pee Wee Reese. All 72 cards in the set have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. The set is listed as #7 on the PSA Registry with an overall GPA of 7.19. The PSA condition report follows: Twenty NM-MT 8: #16, 20 Ruffing (HOF), 22, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39 Henrich, 41, 44, 45, 54 Reese RC (HOF), 57, and 65. Fifty-Two NM 7: #1 Miller, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Hubbell (HOF), 7, 8 Ott (HOF), 9, 10 Vaughan (HOF), 11, 12, 13 Foxx (HOF), 14 Williams (HOF), 15 Cronin (HOF), 17, 18 Greenberg (HOF), 19 Gehringer (HOF), 21 Keller, 23, 24, 26, 31, 32, 37, 40, 42, 43, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56 Vander Meer, 58, 59, 60, 61 V. DiMaggio, 62, 63 D. DiMaggio, 64 Doerr (HOF), 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 Dickey (HOF), 71 J. DiMaggio (HOF), and 72 Gomez (HOF). It is very rare to find such a high-grade collection of 1941 Play Ball assembled and offered as a complete set. This set has been put together by an extremely dedicated collector one card at a time over a period of years, buying from dealers and various auctions in the hobby . In our opinion, a few cards in this set are overgraded relative to their PSA-assigned grades: #1, #14 Williams (small stain on left shoulder and on reverse, approx 30/70 L/R centering, very sharp card but should be graded a little lower), #39 Henrich (horizontal printlines), #64 Doerr (slight wave to border, appears to be sheet-cut), #70 Dickey, #71 Joe DiMaggio (very attractive card but not worthy of NM to our eye), and #72 Gomez (approx 30/70 L/R centering, and small printing blemish in the lower left corner). This is still a beautiful set, with almost all cards well centered, with bold colors, and sharp corners. We hope our expressing our opinion that some cards are overgraded does not cause an overreaction, as this is a beautiful set with tremendous value, but at the same time we have to be able to communicate our opinion to bidders. Our consignor has given us his blessing. So many times when we call consignors to discuss similar situations, the consignor requests that we return the cards so that they may be sold elsewhere, described differently than they would be by us. Don't pass over this set just because a few cards are overgraded, simply adjust accordingly. We have provided scans of every card in the set online. This is a breathtaking 1941 Play Ball set with tremendous break value. Total 72 cards. The SMR value for the 72 individual cards is $23,935. Reserve $8,000. Estimate $15,000+. SOLD FOR $21,150.00
