1949 to 1961 Topps & Bowman Altered Collection (12)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,993.75

This improbable collection of twelve classic baseball cards includes ten altered cards plus two cards that are not altered, but were rejected by PSA because they did not meet its minimum size requirement. 1) 1949 Bowman #50 Jackie Robinson (This is a very fresh, sharp-looking card with perfect registration, brilliant colors, and just the slightest hint of corner wear. Nr/Mt appearance, rejected for grading by PSA due to "minimum size requirement"). 2) 1950 Bowman #46 Yogi Berra (Bright and clean, with four square corners, flawless registration, and centered slightly to the top border. Ex-Mt appearance, rejected for grading by PSA due to "minimum size requirement" ). Altered: 3) 1949 Bowman #226 Duke Snider rookie, 1951 Bowman #305 Willie Mays rookie (incredible-looking card with Nr/Mt-Mt appearance), 1952 Topps #48 Joe Page (error), 1952 Topps #65 Enos Slaughter, 1952 Topps #67 Allie Reynolds, 1953 Topps #82 Mickey Mantle, 1953 Topps #220 Satchell Paige (trimmed), 1956 Topps #31 Hank Aaron, 1960 Topps #493 Duke Snider, and 1961 Topps #388 Roberto Clemente. The preceding ten cards each have an appearance of Ex-Mt or better, but each card has at one time been very slightly trimmed. The trimming is very subtle, and in some cases is impossible to detect without a trained eye. All of these cards were purchased many years ago by our consignor from dealers at conventions as unaltered cards. The 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card in particular was a very expensive original purchase and is a beautiful card. Some might even question PSA's assessment of this card but we are in complete agreement. Extremely close examination of the right border from a side angle provides evidence of trimming. Each of these ten cards has been rejected as "altered" or "evid of trim" by PSA. While these cards will never be graded by PSA, SGC, or GAI, they do represent an extraordinary value for the collector who wants beautiful original ungraded examples of these classics, at a far more affordable level than graded examples with a similar appearance. Total 12 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,993.75
