1887 N172 Old Judge Comiskey and Welsh (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,645.00
Two especially desirable N172 Old Judge cards, one a Hall of Famer, one a Brownie Champ, both graded VG 40 by SGC: 1) Charles Comiskey. Issued during his playing days as leader and player-manager of the legendary World Champion St. Louis Browns of the American Association, Comiskey led the Browns to championships in 1885, 1886, and 1887. This card features a very unusual and striking sliding pose presented on a vertically designed card. The card has evenly rounded corners and, as is often the case with Old Judges, the picture is a little light. The blank reverse has a few flaws common to Old Judges, including some light soiling and a small tape stain. Overall a very attractive Vg example. 2) Curtis Welsh. A very attractive example from the classic 1886 Brownies Champs subset which features portraits of players from this legendary Championship team. This card is bright and clean, with strong contrast, and evenly rounded corners. The "Brownie Champs" set has always been among the most distinctive and popular of all Old Judges. This is a very attractive pair of key cards from this highly prized set. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,645.00
