Collection of Henry Chadwick Handwritten and Signed Letters (3)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,762.50

Offered here are three one-page handwritten letters/poems penned by Henry Chadwick, "The Father of Baseball." The earliest piece, dated August 18, 1848, was clearly one of the most important letters ever written to his wife, as it announces the date of their wedding. He writes in part "I...went to Trinity Church...had our names registered, and we are to be married tomorrow morning after services...Dearest Jenny, meet me tomorrow with a cheerful face, and forget all but the devoted love of your dear. Henry." He also adds a postscript that announces his purchase of the wedding ring. Both the text and signature (penned in black fountain pen) grade "10." The letter (7.75 x 10 inches) displays both vertical and horizontal folds, as well as a slightly rough left border; it is otherwise in Excellent condition. The second piece is a one-page poem titled "To My Darling Wife." The poem is undated and is signed "Henry" in black fountain pen. Both the text and signature grade "8/9." The unlined sheet (4.75 x 8 inches) displays six horizontal folds and minor border tears. In Good condition. The final item is a one-page letter, dated July 24, 1883, written by Chadwick to his wife on the occasion of her birthday. Penned in blue fountain pen, Chadwick's letter extolls her virtues as a wife and also notes that he is enclosing five dollars as a present. It is signed "Henry." Both the text and signature grade "10." The letter (7.25 x 6.25 inches) is in Excellent condition. Accompanying the letter is a small envelope that bears two additional black-ink signatures by Chadwick, one of which is in the form of his wife's name. Written on the front of the envelope, in Henry Chadwick's hand, is the notation "My birthday letter - Mrs. Henry Chadwick - July 24th 1883 - Henry." Both signatures grade "9." Total: 4 items (3 letters/poems plus inscribed envelope). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
