1933 Lineup Card Signed by Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $822.50
Official Major League lineup card, from Cleveland Stadium, signed by Walter Johnson as manager of the Cleveland Indians, and filled out entirely in his hand. The lineup card, which dates from 1933, is signed simply “Johnson” in black ink (grading “9”) in the lower right. In his capacity as manager, he has listed the entire Cleveland lineup with their positions as follows: Galatzer (RF), Burnett (3B), Averill (CF), Vosmik (LF), Hale (2B), Boss (1B), Cissell (SS), Pytlak (C), and Brown (P). Very few items exist directly relating to Johnson's tenure as manager. This is the only lineup card we have ever seen from his managing days. Johnson managed the Cleveland Indians from June 9, 1933 until August 5, 1935. During that time he compiled a record of 179-168. His lifetime managing record was a very respectable 529-432. Previous to managing the Indians, Johnson also served as manager of the Senators from 1929 to 1932. Although this card bears no year, based upon the lineup, it can only date from 1933. Incredibly, “The Big Train” won almost as many games on the mound (417) as he did in his entire seven seasons of managing (529). Considered the fastest pitcher of his era, Johnson holds the Major League record for shutouts (110) and his 2.17 lifetime ERA ranks seventh on the all-time list. In 1936 he became one of the first five inductees into the Hall of Fame. The card (3.75 x 4.75 inches) displays light creasing and is in Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $822.50
