1935 Babe Ruth Signed P.G.A. Open Golf Championship Program

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50

1935 True Temper Cleveland Open Golf Championship program signed on the interior by Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Walter Hagan, and seven others. All of the signatures have been scripted in pencil upon the center scoring sheet and grade “9.” The five notable signatures featured here are those of Ruth, Hall of Fame center fielder Tris Speaker, and golf legends Walter Hagan, Billy Burke, and Tommy Armour. The remaining signers are Grange Alves (course designer and president of the Ohio section PGA), W. H. Way (president of the Cleveland District PGA and tournament chairman), James Alves, W. L. Alves, and W. E. Hodge. Ruth loved golf, and he was one of the participants in this tournament. On the adjacent page, listing the pairings and starting times, the preprinted lineups show that Ruth is scheduled to tee off at 1:40 with Billy Burke and Tommy Armour. This PGA-sanctioned open tournament was held over a three-day period (August 16-19) at the Acacia Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Amazingly, just two months prior to this tournament, Ruth was still playing ball as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth took the job with the Braves under the assumption it would lead to a manager’s position with the club. Unfortunately, Ruth later found out that club owner Emil Fuchs had lied to him regarding the manager’s job and Ruth retired from the game on June 2nd. Baseball’s loss was golf’s gain, however, as the Babe was an avid golfer and the links quickly became known as his “second home.” This signed program dates from the very beginning of Ruth's long post-career association with golf. The program (8.5 x 11 inches) displays a number of creases and general wear throughout. The autographed page remains clean and bright. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
