Circa 1936 Multisigned Ball with Ruth and Gehrig
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,875.00
Goldsmith "Official League" ball, circa 1936, signed in either blue or black ink by six Hall of Fame players including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. This ball is somewhat unique in that the signature appearing on the sweet spot is that of Lou Gehrig, not Babe Ruth. Gehrig's blue ink signature grades "7" overall, while Ruth's signature, also scripted in blue ink, grades "8." Gehrig's signature is obviously on the sweet spot simply because the ball was signed after Ruth's retirement, and Gehrig was presented with the ball to sign first. It is very rare to find any multisigned ball with Ruth not on the sweet spot, and we have never seen another multisigned ball with Ruth on a side panel and Gehrig on the sweet spot. The other signatures (averaging "6/7") on the ball are those of Lefty Gomez, Leo Durocher, Burleigh Grimes, and Joe Cronin. The signatures of Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, and Lefty Grove also appear on the ball, but have been identified by our experts as classic "clubhouse" examples from the era. The ball displays a few areas of scattered toning and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
