1938 National League Champion Chicago Cubs Team-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,057.50
Official National League (Frick) ball signed in blue ink by the following twenty-three members of the 1938 National League champion Chicago Cubs: Dean, Herman, Lazzeri, Hartnett, Johnson (coach), Galan, Cavarretta, O’Dea, Page, Bryant, Root, Reynolds, Garbark, Russell, Demaree, French, Lee, Carleton, Marty, Collins, Hack, Jurges, and one other (illegible). No single signature occupies the “sweet spot,” but those of Herman, Marty, Collins, Hack, and Russell all claim some portion of that honorary space. The signatures range in grade from “4” to “8,” averaging “6-7.” The 1938 Cubs remain one of baseball’s most memorable clubs due to player/manager Gabby Hartnett’s fabled “Homer in the Gloaming” against the Pirates on September 28th. That home run, which broke a 5-5 tie as darkness threatened to end the game, represented the Cubs’ second straight victory over the Pirates and all but eliminated the Bucs from pennant contention. The lightly toned ball features bold manufacturer’s stampings and displays a few minor abrasions. Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
