1935 Babe Ruth Inscribed Program Cover
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,643.75
1935 cover to The Xavier (Vol. XIV, No. 3) beautifully inscribed in black fountain pen by Babe Ruth: "To Cadet Major Roger Damio - Sincerely Babe Ruth." Both the inscription and signature are very strong and bold, grading "8/9" overall. The cover notes that this is the "Easter Issue," thus it was probably signed in early spring of 1935. Ruth was beginning his final Major League season at the time as a member of the Boston Braves. The Xavier was the school paper for Xavier High School in New York City. The school was founded in 1847 and in the 1880s became known as a Jesuit military day school. In 1935, the year of this program cover, its regiment became a Junior R.O.T.C. program. The cover (7.25 x 10 inches) has a few insignificant areas of light discoloration, as well as a few tiny tears along the border edges (all of which have been matted out). While technically in Very Good condition, the piece displays as Excellent. It has been handsomely matted and framed to total dimensions of 12.5 x 15.75 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
