1940 Babe Ruth Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,112.50
Babe Ruth personal check, dated January 9, 1940, is made out to “Cash” in the amount of $50 and signed “G. H. Ruth” in blue fountain pen (grading “8”). The check, which is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, has been filled out entirely in Ruth’s hand and bears his name printed along the left margin. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes but has not been endorsed. The check has a single light vertical crease, as well as a small bank spindle hole tear (very common with checks), and two clear strips of light adhesive residue (from tape) appear on the reverse, indicating that the check was once mounted in an album or framed, otherwise in Excellent condition. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
