1941 Babe Ruth Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
Babe Ruth personal check, dated February 26, 1941, made out to "J. Harvey McCoy” in the amount of $88.01, and signed "G.H. Ruth" in black fountain pen. The entire check, which is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, has been filled out entirely in Ruth’s hand and bears his name printed along the left margin. It is interesting to note that J. Harvey McCoy owned the J. Harvey McCoy insurance company. Ruth was both a client and a frequent golf buddy of McCoy. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. This is a choice example with the signature completely untouched by the normal bank cancellation marks and stamps. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (none affecting the signature) and is endorsed by the recipient on the reverse. Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
