1946 Cleveland Program/Scorecard Signed by Ruth, Cobb, and Speaker
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,350.00
1946 Cleveland Indians program, for a game against the Chicago White Sox, signed on the interior by Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Tris Speaker. Each player has scripted his name in pencil on the scorecard section for the White Sox. All of the signatures grade “9." All three players were long retired at the time this piece was signed. While we don’t know exactly what the occasion was that brought them together in Cleveland in 1946, it was very likely an Old Timers' Day game. The circumstances of the signing notwithstanding, this is very rare and desirable combination of signatures. Both Ruth and Cobb were among the first five inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 and Speaker was elected the following year. Items signed by Ruth and Cobb together are also scarce due to the fact that the two players did not like each other and, therefore, generally avoided appearing together in public. Ruth passed away just two years after signing this piece. The eight-page program, which commemorates the Cleveland Sesquicentennial on the cover, displays moderate wear including a center pocket fold. The interior scorecard bears a few stray pencil notations and a corner chip (not affecting the signatures). In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
