Circa 1950 Mickey Mantle Signed Photo as a Member of the Joplin Minors
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,057.50
Offered is an exceedingly rare Mickey Mantle signed photo dating from his 1950 season with the Joplin Minors, a New York Yankees Class C minor league affiliate in the Western Association. The 5 x 7-inch black-and-white photo, cut from either a newspaper or magazine (or similar publication), pictures Mantle kneeling in uniform and has been signed “Mickey Mantle” in black fountain pen (grading “8”). This is an extremely early Mantle signature example, dating from his second season of professional baseball while still in the minor leagues. Mantle signed with the Yankees straight out of high school in 1949 and was immediately sent to play with Class D Independence of the KOM League. The following year he was promoted to Joplin, where he batted .383 with 26 home runs and 136 RBI. In 1951 he made the remarkable jump from Class C to the Major Leagues. This rare signed picture dates from his earliest pre-stardom days in the minor leagues. The photo has been mounted upon a thin cardboard backing and displays a few minor border tears an well as an area of light discoloration along the base. In Good to Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
