Jackie Robinson Signed Presentation Photograph

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,410.00

This attractive black-and-white photo captures Jackie Robinson in uniform as the finishes lacing up his cleats prior to a game and has been inscribed in black fountain pen (grading "8"): "To my friend Carly, with best wishes always - Jackie Robinson." While this signed photograph is not accompanied by any documentation from its original recipient, it was interesting to note that our consignor presented this as being signed by Jackie Robinson to legendary singer/songwriter Carly Simon. Accepted for auction simply as a magnificent personalized Jackie Robinson signed photograph, a little research revealed that Carly Simon's parents were, in fact, close friends with Jackie Robinson and his wife, Rachel. Robinson lived in Stamford, Connecticut, as did the Simons, and the families were very close. Jackie and Rachael Robinson even stayed with the Simons while they waited for construction on their new home to be completed. In the Ken Burns documentary, Baseball , Carly Simon commented on her childhood years growing up as Robinson's neighbor: "It was during that incredible season of 1955 and I would often ride with Jackie to Ebbets Field and sit in the dugout with him before the game started." Simon also sang two renditions of Take Me Out To The Ball Game on the documentary. The second of the two, sung a cappella, appears at the end of the sixth inning of Baseball and was offered as a tribute to Robinson. Without a letter from Ms. Simon, we cannot guarantee that this photo was signed for Carly Simon, but it certainly appears to be a very strong possibility. At the very least it is a magnificent Jackie Robinson signed photograph. The photo (7.25 x 9.5 inches) displays a few creases. Although technically in Good to Very Good condition, the photo offers a far greater visual appeal than its grade suggests. The signed photograph has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 18 x 20 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
