Circa 1965 Roger Maris Twice-Signed New York Yankees Questionnaire

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

This New York Yankees official player questionnaire has been signed twice, as required, by Roger Maris along the bottom. Both Maris signatures have been beautifully scripted in blue ink and grade "9/10." The information gathered from these questionnaires was used not only for official team biographies of each player (yearbooks, programs, etc.) but also by radio and television announcers for color commentary. Maris has not answered all of the questions (some don't apply), but most bear either scripted or printed blue-ink responses, all in Maris' hand. Although the questionnaire is not dated, the combination of his listed marriage date (10/13/56) and the age of this oldest child, Susan Anne (eight years old), indicates that it was filled out in either 1965 or 1966 (Maris was traded to the Cardinals in 1967). Included among the information given here is the fact that Maris' favorite hobby is golf and, interestingly, his favorite spectator sport is football, not baseball. (Maris was a standout football player in high school and turned down an athletic scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, opting instead to sign with the Cleveland Indians.) The most amusing question, which was left blank, asks for his "winter occupation." (Although hard to believe today, given the salaries of today's players, most professional athletes at that time often needed to supplement their income with off-season jobs.) This is a fascinating and unique Roger Maris twice-signed official Yankees document dating from just a few short years after the historic 1961 season. The questionnaire (8 x 13.5 inches) displays two horizontal folds and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+ SOLD FOR $1,527.50
