Hilton Smith Signed Index Card

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,292.50

Unlined sheet of paper inscribed and signed by Hall of Fame pitcher and former Negro-League star Hilton Smith (1907-1983). Smith has signed the card in black marker (grading “10”) in the course of providing a brief list of his many accomplishments: “Hilton Smith, Pitcher – K.C. Monarchs B.B. Club. I pitch a no hitter in 1937 – no walk no run no hit. I pitch in 6 all star games. 2 world series – won 2 game in each one.” According to his Negro League and Major League contemporaries alike, Hilton Smith was one of the top pitchers to ever take the mound. Despite pitching in the shadow of Satchel Paige for much of his career, Smith’s accomplishments actually rivaled those of his more flamboyant teammate. Smith won twenty or more games in each of his twelve seasons with the Monarchs and appeared in six Negro-League All-Star Games. He was at his best between the years 1939 and 1942, when he won ninety-three games against only eleven losses. He was elected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. The sheet (5 x 3 inches) has been neatly trimmed to its current dimensions and is in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
