Thurman Munson Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,350.00

"Official League" baseball inscribed by Thurman Munson on a side panel. Munson's inscription, which reads "To Danny - Best Wishes - Thurman Munson," has been scripted in blue ink and grades "8/9." This ball comes with the provenance of having been consigned directly by "Danny," the ball's original recipient. A friend of the consignor's father ran a dry cleaning business and Munson was one of his regular customers. His dad had heard that Munson was a reluctant signer, and for years he refrained from asking his friend for assistance in asking for the autograph of the perennial All-Star catcher. In 1978, however, his dad finally provided a ball and requested that his friend ask Munson to sign the ball for his son. When he came in to pick up his clothes that week, the Yankees captain kindly obliged. Munson, of course, passed away tragically the following year in a plane crash. Munson single-signed baseballs are rare, especially those inscribed to a specific individual with direct provenance. This ball has been in the possession of our consignor for the past twenty-eight years. It is accompanied by a notarized letter from the consignor describing the history of the ball and the circumstances of its signing. The letter notes that Munson later dropped off the pinback button for Danny picturing Munson that accompanies the ball. The pinback button is three inches in diameter (Ex-Mt). The off-white ball displays a trace of light soiling (not on the signature panel) and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. In Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,350.00
