1978 Thurman Munson Endorsed Yankees Payroll Check
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,762.50
New York Yankees payroll check, dated May 28, 1978, made out to team captain Thurman Munson and endorsed by Munson on the reverse. The check has been made out in the amount of $81.00 and has been signed “Thurman L. Munson” in blue ink (“9”) on the reverse. Thurman Munson signed items are quite scarce today, due in large part to his untimely death in 1979. Official New York Yankees documents signed by Munson are rarer still. A signed payroll check represents one of the rarest and most ideal type of Yankee-related signed item for the legendary catcher. We would not be surprised if a Munson signed Yankee payroll check is actually rarer than a Ruth signed Yankee payroll check. Accompanied by an original 1976 UPI wire photo (8 x 10 inches) of Munson that would be perfect for framing together with the check. The check (8.5 x 3.5 inches) displays a vertical fold and normal bank cancellation stamps, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. The wire photo is in Excellent condition and includes the original wire caption, dated 9/16/76, on the reverse. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
