Timothy Murnane Large-Format Oval-Framed Studio Portrait
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,997.50
Stunning original large-format oval studio photograph of former Major League player, executive, and legendary sportswriter Timothy Murnane. Dating from approximately the turn of the century, the oval photo captures "The Silver King" in formal attire and is extremely striking in its presentation, as intended. The impressive quality and size of this piece (14 x 20 inches) strongly suggest that it once was displayed prominently in Murnane's home. Murnane played in both the National Association and the National League before becoming one of Boston's most respected sports writers. He eventually ascended to the position of sports editor for the Boston Globe before passing away unexpectedly in 1917 at the age of sixty-four. The photo appears to have benefitted from professional restoration to a few tears, the largest of which appears along the left border, but this is very unobtrusive and has no impact on its overall appearance. The central image of Murnane remains free of any major defects and the photo displays excellent clarity and contrast. While technically in Very Good condition, the photo presents as Excellent. Framed to slightly larger dimensions in an elaborate vintage oval frame with convex glass (a rarely seen style of framing that long ago was very popular, with glass that curves outward). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
