Circa 1868 Henry Chadwick Oval Portrait Photograph

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,818.75

Exceptionally rare original studio portrait of early baseball pioneer Henry Chadwick, originating directly from Chadwick's great-grandson. One of baseball's most significant early figures, Henry Chadwick influenced the game as America's premier baseball journalist of the nineteenth century. He developed the modern box score, introduced statistics such as batting average and ERA, wrote numerous instructional manuals on the game, and edited many baseball guides. He was also an influential member of baseball's early rules committees. His tireless work and devotion to the game greatly contributed to popularizing baseball during its early years. This is a flawless original professional photographic image of the man who has long been recognized as "The Father of Baseball." Chadwick was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1938. There are very few original photographs of Chadwick known to exist. Players were constantly being photographed, for books, card sets, team photos, etc., but a baseball writer such as Chadwick, despite his great prominence and extraordinary significance to the game, naturally had far fewer occasions to be photographed than players. The photograph measures 7 x 5.25 inches, and is a professionally produced portrait intended for display. This is a very rare museum-caliber study of one of nineteeth-century baseball's most important figures. Interestingly, the original custom-made vintage wood frame that now houses the piece did not originally come with this photo but instead came from a matching display photo of Chadwick's father. The offered piece entered the hobby many years ago, at which time its original frame was discarded and it was placed in a modern frame. Many years later additional materials from the Chadwick estate were sold, including a matching oval photo of Chadwick's father in an identical frame to that which previously housed the original Chadwick photo. When opportunity arose, the two photos were reunited by our consignor, who replaced the photo of Chadwick's father with the photo of Henry Chadwick. Thus, although the frame is not original to the photo, it originates from the Chadwick estate and is identical in all respects to the frame in which the photo was long ago housed. With flawless contrast. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
