1874 Red Stockings Cigar Label
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $352.50
This beautiful multicolor stone litho cigar box end label (5 x 2 inches) was manufactured in 1874 by Nichols & McDonald, Tobacconists of Boston. It is the only example known to exist. Located at 400 Washington Street, Boston, Nichols & McDonald were the sole proprietors for Red Stocking Cigars. The only other known relic relating to this establishment and Red Stocking Cigars is a multicolor advertising poster, also from 1874, featuring George Wright endorsing this same product. Only one example of that advertising poster is known to exist, and it is extremely significant in that it is the earliest known advertising endorsement of any product by a ballplayer. To the left of the Red Stockings logo the cigar label reads "Manufactured by N & M;" to the right of the logo it reads "Boston." The Red Stockings Cigar brand was first established years earlier, when the Red Stockings were in Cincinnati. In addition to the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings brand cigars and the 1874 Boston version produced by Nichols & McDonald, the Red Stocking Cigars brand was reestablished many years later. The later edition of Red Stockings Cigars bore labels featuring a generic Boston ballplayer (based on George Wright's image on the 1874 poster) which are copyright dated 1884, but were issued years after that date. These later labels are quite rare and desirable, but in no way should be confused with this earlier, much rarer, and more significant label. Vg-Ex condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $352.50
