1884 Silk Baseball Clubhouse Display Banner
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,175.00
Blue silk banner commemorating the 1884 championship season of the Invicti Base Ball Club of Rhode Island. The banner, lettered in gold paint, reads "Invicti B.B.C. Champion of R.I. - I.O.O.F. Base Ball League 1884." Almost certainly presented to the team and produced for clubhouse display, as was the custom in the early days of the game, the banner features tasseled edges and a metal rod along the top from which it hangs. Not much is known about the Invicti Base Ball Club other than the fact that they were an amateur club, as I.O.O.F. stands for Independent Order of Odd Fellows (a fraternal organization founded in North America in 1819). Nineteenth-century baseball banners are extremely rare today due to their fragile nature and the fact that such banners were produced in such limited numbers (just one for the team clubhouse). We can recall seeing only two or three clubhouse banners at auction over the past 35+ years. The offered piece displays a number of small tears throughout, but the gold lettering remains completely intact. Technically in Good condition due to the tears; however, the colors remain bright and vibrant, and the piece, when properly displayed, has an Excellent visual appearance. Approximately 21 x 30 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
