1894 New York Giants (vs. Washington) Program (John Ward Cover Portrait)
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,057.50
Extremely rare and attractive 1894 New York Giants program, issued for a game against the Washington Senators, features a portrait photo of player/manager John Montgomery Ward on the cover. Comprised of a cover plus four interior pages. The interior scorecard features the preprinted lineups for both teams, including Ward, Van Haltren, Connor, and Rusie for the Giants. The 1894 season marked Ward's last season in professional baseball. Ward starred for seventeen years as both a pitcher and shortstop, but he is best remembered today for the rebellious war he waged against team owners regarding the infamous reserve clause. Although his efforts failed, the issue remained a focal point of contention between players and owners until it was finally abolished in 1977. Ward went out in style in 1894, as his club captured the World Championship by sweeping the Baltimore Orioles in the first Temple Cup series that fall. Neatly scored in pencil, recording a 6-2 win by the Giants. The four-page program (6.5 x 9.5 inches) displays a center vertical fold, a paper clip impression on the front and back cover, and tears and paper loss on the back cover from having once been mounted in an album. In Good condition. Particularly striking and ideal for display. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
