Henry Chadwick Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

This collection of three Henry Chadwick items is comprised of two cabinet photos and a presentation trophy cup. 1) Cabinet card in a vintage framed display. The image pictures a young Henry Chadwick seated at his desk and bears the written notation "Henry Chadwick New York Clipper" in white ink along the base of the photo. Printed directly below the photo (on the mount), also in white ink, is the notation, "To Abe Yager." Abe Yager was a close friend of Henry Chadwick's and the respected sports editor of The Brooklyn Eagle , the paper for which Chadwick also wrote. Produced by photographer Frank Pearsall, Brooklyn. The photo features a silhouetting of Chadwick's image, indicating that this photo was used at one time for publication. A cut newspaper clipping, reading "To the memory of Henry Chadwick - 'The Father of Base Ball'" is affixed to the front of the glass by means of clear tape. The cabinet card (approximately 4 x 6 inches) is in apparent Excellent condition and has been matted (with the matting featuring floral decorations) and framed (deep frame, almost shadow-boxed) to total dimensions of 12 x 14 x 3 inches. 2) Cabinet card featuring a photo of a young Henry Chadwick seated at his desk (image is identical to the previously listed photo). Produced by the Pearsall Gallery photo studio in Brooklyn, with advertising for the studio on the reverse. Chadwick's image is heavily silhouetted and clippings on the reverse indicate that this very photograph was later used for his obituary in 1908. The notation "Henry Chadwick - Bklyn Eagle" is written along the base of the photo in black ink. Also affixed to the reverse is a newspaper production sheet. The cabinet card (4.75 x 7 inches) displays a heavy crease in the upper left corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition. 3) Trophy cup, mounted upon a wood base, presented to Chadwick by The Society of Old Brooklynites. The engraving along the front reads "Presented to Henry Chadwick on your Golden Anniversary in Journalism From The Society of Old Brooklynites." The cup (10 inches in height and 5 inches in diameter) is heavily tarnished and the base displays a number of minor abrasions. In Very Good condition. This is a very unusual and interesting collection of unique items relating to Henry Chadwick. Total: 3 items (2 cabinet cards and a trophy). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
