1888 N172 Old Judge Billy Sunday
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,645.00
Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. 1888 N172 Old Judge of legendary ballplayer-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday (throwing pose), center fielder, with the Pittsburgh Nationals. This is an extraordinary high grade example with an incredibly bold image and tremendous detail. Even if this card was a common player, the perfect contrast and elaborate background would make this a particularly exceptional card. With a copyright date of 1888, the card was issued during Sunday's first season with Pittsburgh; up to that point, he had spent his entire Major League career as a backup outfielder with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. It is interesting to note that Goodwin used a photograph of Sunday in his Chicago uniform, probably because a photo of him with Pittsburgh was not yet available, and airbrushed "Chicago" on his uniform blank. This is a magnificent example from this landmark issue of one of the nineteenth century's most well known players. A very sharp-looking card in all respects, perfectly clean front and back, with unimprovable photo quality, square corners, and featuring Sunday posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,645.00
