Early Presidential Baseball News Photograph Collection (8)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $822.50
In 1908 President Taft began the tradition of opening the baseball season with the ceremonial first pitch. Since that time, nearly every U.S. President has taken part in that fabled rite of spring. Offered here is a collection of eight early black-and-white news photos capturing three different Presidents as they officially start the baseball season (1922 through 1936). All of them, with the exception of one (1922 Harding), appear to be second-generation prints; however, it must be noted that all are period and were probably produced within a few short years of the original (all 1930s or earlier). All of the photos were taken at Washington's Griffith Stadium and many include the teams' respective managers and/or players looking on. 1) 8 x 10-inch photo of Warren Harding in 1922. Period notations on the reverse identify Herbert Hoover and his wife (seated next to the President) and Harding's wife. 2) 8.5 x 6.5-inch original photo of Warren Harding in 1923. Washington manager Donnie Bush looks on. A Keystone View Co. stamp appears on the reverse. Included is the original wire caption (detached). 3) 10 x 8-inch photo of Calvin Coolidge throwing out the first pitch of the 1924 World Series as manager Bucky Harris, Senators owner Clark Griffith, and Mrs. Coolidge look on. Period notations on reverse. 4) 10 x 7-inch photo of Vice President Charles Dawes throwing out the first pitch in 1925 as Bucky Harris and Clark Griffith look on. Period notations on the reverse reveal the fact that President Coolidge declined the honor that year by stating "It looks like it might rain." A Harris & Ewing stamp also appears on the reverse. 5) 10 x 8-inch photo of President Roosevelt throwing out the first pitch in 1933 as Joe Cronin and Clark Griffith look on. Period notations appear on the reverse. 6) 10 x 8-inch photo of President Roosevelt throwing out the first pitch in 1935 as Clark Griffith, Bucky Harris, and Jimmie Foxx look on. Period notations appear on the reverse. 7) 10 x 8-inch photo of President Roosevelt throwing out the first pitch in 1936 as Vice President Garner, Joe McCarthy, Bucky Harris, and Clark Griffith look on. Period notations appear on the reverse. 8) 10 x 8-inch photo of President Roosevelt throwing out the first pitch in 1936 as Vice President Garner, Joe McCarthy, Bucky Harris, and Clark Griffith look on. Same image as previous listing, taken from a different angle. Period notations appear on the reverse. These photos originate from the New York Athletic Club and are accompanied by a period envelope (12 x 9 inches, Gd-Vg) from the club that bears the written notation on the front: "Pix of presidents throwing the ball out on opening game ceremonies 1920 thru 1939 (with note on back by VXF Sr. who attended)." Six of the photos display mounting remnants on the reverse. All of the photos display light creasing and/or tiny tears along the border areas and are in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Total: 8 photos plus envelope. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $822.50
