Joe DiMaggio and Honus Wagner Early Childhood Photos

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $940.00

Roy Campanella was once quoted as saying “You have to be a man to be a big leaguer, but you have to have a lot of little boy in you, too.” Offered here are two rare photos picturing two youngsters who never lost their youthful adoration of the game. The first pictures Joe DiMaggio at the age of three and represents the earliest-known image of the famed “Yankee Clipper.” This is the very photograph which was lent by the DiMaggio family to LIFE magazine for use in its May 1, 1939 issue, as noted by the publishing ink stamp on the reverse. In fact, this image is used to this day on the homepage of Joe DiMaggio's official website. A second publishing stamp on the reverse reads "Artisto – Oct 20 1937.” Vintage pencil notations on the reverse indicate where the photo was taken, “Back Yard – Grandma’s House – Collinsville, Calif.” The photo (4 x 6 inches) displays wear and light creasing along all four corners and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The second photo pictures a group of four young boys, the tallest of whom is Honus Wagner at age ten. This is not a first-generation print. Ink notations on the reverse identify Wagner and list his age. The date “12/13/23” appears above the notation, most likely indicating the date this print was produced. Wagner was born in 1874, thus the image was originally taken in 1884. The photo (5 x 7 inches) displays evidence of both former and contemporary editorial markings, including outlining and shading, thus it is very likely that this photograph has been published though we have never seen it before. In Excellent condition overall. Two fascinating and extremely rare (possibly unique) early images of two of baseball's greatest legends. Total: 2 photos. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $940.00
