1936 Joe DiMaggio News Photo - First Career Home Run, Greeted By Gehrig! (DiMaggio Estate)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,112.50

Imagine the experience of being a rookie on the 1936 New York Yankees. Imagine further that upon hitting your first Major League home run you're congratulated at the plate by none other than Lou Gehrig. Such a thrill was enjoyed by Joe DiMaggio on May 10th of that year and, luckily, an Associated Press photographer captured that historic moment in the presented photographic image for all posterity. Offered here is an original Associated Press news photograph picturing the famed "Yankee Clipper" about to cross the plate after his first Major League home run. Adding to the significance of the piece is its unique provenance. The offered photo was DiMaggio's personal copy and originates directly from his estate. It is interesting to note that while most players would normally be grinning ear to ear after hitting their first Major League home run, DiMaggio instead stays true to his undemonstrative nature and offers the fans only a tight-lipped doff of his cap as he approaches home plate. Still, the importance of the event was not lost on him, for he not only made the effort to obtain an original print of the photograph, but also kept it his entire life. The photo (7 x 9 inches) is in Excellent condition and is accompanied by its original wire caption dated "5/10/36." As noted previously, this photo originates from DiMaggio's estate and comes with an LOA signed by each of DiMaggio's two granddaughters attesting to its special provenance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 12.25 x 10.75 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
