1940s Alerta Antonio Alcalde Premium Pictures Complete Set (70)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $587.50

Complete factory set of seventy Alerta Antonio Alcalde premium pictures issued in Cuba during the late 1940s/early 1950s. According to The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards , this set was issued by a newspaper or sports periodical. The seventy premiums, each printed on semi-gloss paper, feature black-and-white photos of players from four different teams: the Almendares Scorpions; the Cienfuegos Elephants; the Habana Lions; and the Marianao Tigers. The premiums for each team are color coded along the base in blue, green, red, or orange. There are eighteen subjects for both Almendares and Habana clubs, and seventeen each for the other two clubs. As is the case with most Cuban issues, many American and former Major League players are represented in the set. The most prominent star in the set is Hall of Famer Ray Dandridge (Vg-Ex). Little information is known about this set and exactly how it was issued. We have been told that bound factory sets of this issue were offered, with premiums each having two holes neatly punched in the left border to allow the premiums to be bound and presented in book-form. All of the premiums in this set feature two neatly punched uniform “notebook” holes in the left border as well as separating rice paper sheets, which appear to be original to the set, between each premium. This set looks like it was issued in exactly this manner (with the rice paper sheets) and has simply been neatly unbound. Dimensions: 8 x 11 inches each. Clean set, a few minor surface wrinkles here and there. Without reference to the border holes, the set is in overall Very Good condition. The first set we have ever offered. Total: 70 premiums. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $587.50
