1939 Bill Dickey Large-Format George Burke Photo (1939 Play Ball Image)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,880.00
Original large-format George Burke photo of Bill Dickey featuring the image used for Dickey's 1939 Play Ball baseball card (card #30). As noted in The Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (edited by Bob Lemke), the 1939 Play Ball issue, produced by Gum Inc., ushered in a new era of baseball cards due to a number of important departures from previous tobacco and gum cards. One of the most noticeable differences was in the photography, which was of a much higher quality than previously seen on baseball cards. That's understandable given the fact that Gum, Inc., hired famed baseball photographer George Burke to produce the images. Burke, a Chicago-based photographer, began his sports photography career in 1929 with the Cubs and later also became the team photographer for the White Sox. He passed away in 1948, but not before leaving a legacy of photographic excellence equal to that of his famous predecessors such as Conlon, Bain, and Thompson. Large-format Burke photos are particularly rare and the offered piece's special connection to the famed 1939 Play Ball set makes this a truly significant example. The photograph (11 x 14 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays moderate soiling along the white border areas, as well as a number of light creases in the lower right corner (not affecting the image). The photo was once displayed in a large album and as a result both paper and adhesive residue remain on the reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
