1951 New York City Certificate of Civic Merit Issued to Mickey Mantle - His First Major League Award - Rookie Season
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,818.75
This Certificate of Civic Merit issued by the City of New York in 1951 to Mickey Mantle for his participation in the city's annual "Mayor's Trophy Game" was the first Major League award given to Mantle, and he in turn gave it as a gift to his sister Barbara. The large-format document bears Mantle's name boldly stamped in the center and has been signed in faded blue ink by Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri (grading "7") and Walter Shirley, the chairman of the 1951 Mayor's Trophy Game. The Mayor's Trophy Game was an annual midseason exhibition game between the Yankees and one of their in-city National League rivals, the Dodgers or Giants (the teams alternated every other year). All of the proceeds from the game were used for the advancement of sandlot baseball in the city. This is a special piece in that it was issued during Mantle's rookie season, and thus represents his very first Major League award. It is accompanied by an LOA signed by Mantle's sister, Barbara Mantle DeLise, in which she writes: "This letter is to confirm that the document in your possession is the first award given to my brother, Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle, in his long and distinguished Major League career." The Mayor's Trophy Game ended in 1958, when the Dodgers and Giants left for California, but was revived in 1963 against the newly established New York Mets. The certificate (15.5 x 13.5 inches) displays a vertical fold line and a number of creases. In Very Good condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 23.75 x 21.75 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
