1972-1975 Billy Martin State of Michigan Drivers License
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $705.00
State of Michigan drivers license issued to Alfred Manuel “Billy” Martin in 1972. The license, which features Martin’s photo and bears a photocopy of his signature, was issued on December 8, 1972 and expired three years later, in 1975, on Martin’s birthday (May 16th). Martin was manager of the Detroit Tigers from 1971 through 1973, hence the need for the State of Michigan license. Martin guided the Tigers to the Eastern Division title in 1972, but lost to the Oakland A’s in the American League Championship Series. After leaving Detroit, Martin briefly managed Texas before joining the Yankees in 1975. Under his leadership the Yankees returned to their championship ways, winning the pennant in 1976 and the World Series in 1977. Unfortunately, his tumultuous relationship with team owner George Steinbrenner put him on a managerial carousel that saw him leave and return five times over the next seven years. Martin died tragically on Christmas Day, 1989, in a car crash near his home in Johnson City, New York. He was sixty-one years old. The license (3.5 x 2.5 inches) displays wear typical of being carried in a wallet for many years and is in Excellent condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $705.00
