Three Mickey Mantle Signed Limited-Edition Guernsey's Auction Catalogs

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For -

In 2003 the Mantle family parted with the remainder of Mickey Mantle's baseball collection in an historic auction conducted by Guernsey's at Madison Square Garden. To commemorate that sale, in addition to producing a soft-bound catalog documenting the collection which is a classic Mantle collectible in itself, Guernsey's printed a limited number of 102 deluxe hardbound catalogs (ninety-five numbered copies plus seven artist's proofs), each individually hand-numbered on the interior. What made the catalogs special, however, was the inclusion of a Mickey Mantle signed art print (titled "The Greatest Switch Hitter") tipped into the cover of each catalog. As noted in the signed COA (from the Mantle family) that accompanies each catalog, the 102 identical signed prints used in this special Mantle-signed catalog promotion were all supplied directly from the Mantle Family Archives and were "furnished by the family expressly for inclusion in this deluxe, limited edition catalogue." A statement on the limitation page adds that all of the prints were signed by Mantle in the 1980s. Offered here are three limited-edition signed auction catalogs from the 2003 Guernsey's Mantle sale, numbered, respectively, "71/95," "72/95," and "73/95." All three Mantle signatures have been scripted in blue Sharpie and grade "10." Each catalog (9 x 9 inches) is housed in its original protective slipcover and is in Mint condition. These catalogs represent an exceptionally rare and significant Mantle-signed keepsake that few collectors were even aware of, and they have remained very much "under the radar" of hobbyists. This is the first time we have even seen these limited-edition signed catalogs properly documented. Only now as their existence is known are sophisticated collectors finally recognizing the catalog's significance. In the future we would not be surprised to see them achieve a status all their own in the field of Mantle collectibles. The original issue price of the signed limited-edition catalogs was $1,200 each. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 3 catalogs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR
