1939 Babe Ruth Signed Baseball Centennial Stamp

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,115.00

Extremely rare, and possibly unique, 1939 Baseball Centennial 3-cent postage stamp signed by Babe Ruth. Barry Halper’s fabled collection at one time included hundreds of Ruth signed items; however, this piece was certainly one of the most unusual. The tiny dimensions of the stamp, along with its dark coloring, would seem to preclude it as a worthy venue for Ruth’s signature, but that was not the case. Ruth has not only boldly signed the piece in black fountain pen (grading “9”), but he also found room to add the date as well: “7-23-46.” It’s not known how many such stamps Ruth signed during his day, but the number must have been very small, for we have never encountered another example. Because of its unique nature, Barry decided to keep this stamp instead of parting with it in 1999 during the initial public offering of his collection. In fact, he actually had it hanging on his Ruth wall, framed with a photo of Ruth in a large display (large considering the framed display was really devoted to a single stamp). We thought it would be more practical to take the stamp out of the framed display for this auction and present it in an ideal encapsulated form. The stamp (1.5 x 1 inches) appears to have been laminated and is affixed to a small cardboard backing, which in turn is affixed to an index-sized white-cardboard mount. In Excellent to Mint condition. Encapsulated as “Authentic” by SGC (in conjunction with James Spence Authentication). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
