Circa 1970 Roberto Clemente Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,997.50
Official National League (Giles) ball signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente. As was his custom, Clemente has magnificently signed the ball in blue ink (grading “9”) in the center of a side panel. Due to his untimely death in 1972 at the age of thirty-eight, Clemente single-signed baseballs are particularly rare and, of course, extremely desirable. In recent years it has been discovered that many Clemente signatures, formerly universally accepted as authentic, were actually signed by an employee, making truly authentic Clemente signed balls all the rarer. The ball is moderately soiled and displays several thin light circular areas of discoloration that are the result of the manner in which the ball was previously mounted for display. The ball also displays a number of minor abrasions, and because of this, as a technical point it cannot be ruled out with absolute certainty that there was never another signature on the ball; however, we believe that not to be the case, and believe this was simply a game-used ball that was later signed by Clemente. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
