Elston Howard Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $470.00
Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed by Elston Howard, former American League MVP and the first black player in New York Yankees history. Single-signed Elston Howard baseballs are particularly rare, and all the more highly sought-after as he is a member of the 1961 Yankees. Howard has inscribed the ball in black ink (grading “6/7”) on a side panel, “To Kelly – Best Wishes – Elston Howard.” Howard was one of the top catchers of his era. Among his many honors were nine consecutive All-Star Game selections and the MVP Award in 1963. He also helped lead the Yankees to eight pennants and four World Championships. Howard passed away in 1980 and his signature alone on a baseball is highly prized by collectors today. The inscription has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac and the ball displays a few areas of light toning. A few small abrasions appear on a side panel as a result of the ball having once been mounted. Vg-Ex. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $470.00
