1970 Gabby Hartnett Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,057.50
Gabby Hartnett single-signed baseball featuring a lengthy inscription by the Hall of Fame catcher. Hartnett has inscribed the side panel of this unofficial ball, “To Gordon – a real fellow – Best to you always – From Gabby Hartnett – Chicago Cubs.” Both Hartnett’s signature and inscription have been scripted in black ink and grade “6/7.” The date, “Feb-1-70,” is written in blue ink on the sweet spot. Gabby Hartnett was one of the greatest players in Cubs history and is best remembered today for his historic “Homer in the Gloaming,” which helped the Cubs capture the 1938 pennant. Hartnett, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1955, passed away in 1972. Because of his early date of death, many years before collecting Hall of Fame signatures on single-signed balls became extremely popular, single-signed Hartnett balls are very scarce. This is a particularly outstanding example aesthetically and impressive because of the lengthy inscription. We have always been a big fan of personalizations on single-signed balls. The extra writing sometimes allows for context, naturally provides a greater certainty of authenticity (there is so much more writing for the authenticators to assess), and occasionally, such as on this example, provides a precise signing date. This is a tremendous Hartnett single. Nr-Mt. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
