Willard Brown Signed Index Card (HOF 2006)

Starting Bid - $200.00 , Sold For - $528.75

Lined index card signed in blue ink (grading “10”) by Hall of Fame outfielder and former Negro League star Willard Brown (1915-1996). Willard Brown enjoyed the reputation as one of the most feared sluggers in Negro League history. Perhaps the greatest testament to his hitting prowess is the fact that Josh Gibson himself bestowed Brown with the nickname “Home Run.” Brown starred with the Monarchs for fourteen seasons between the years 1935 and 1951 (he missed time due to military service, and one year was spent in the Mexican League), leading the club to six pennants. In 1947 Brown followed in the footsteps of Jackie Robinson and briefly joined the St. Louis Browns. Although he only played in twenty-one games with the Browns, he became the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. He later returned to the Negro Leagues and then finished his career in the minors, playing with a number of clubs in the Texas League. Brown was one of seventeen Negro League players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 by special election, ten years after his death. His signature is particularly rare. This is an ideal example in an extremely desirable form. The card (5 x 3) displays a small tear which does not affect presentation (running through the "w" of Brown’s last name) that has been repaired on the reverse by clear tape. Along the bottom edge of the reverse is an insignificant strip of surface paper loss which is obviously the result of long ago being mounted and framed (mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy), and also on the reverse are a few neatly written pencil notations regarding Brown's career. Despite the small noted flaws, the card is bright and clean and strongly presents as Excellent. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $528.75
