Mickey Mantle Signed "1952 Topps Card" Painting

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,880.00

Unique, specially commissioned artwork of Mickey Mantle signed by Mantle in black Sharpie. This magnificent oil on canvas painting by noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak is a reproduction of Mantle's 1952 Topps rookie card. The painting is exact in every detail save one: Instead of depicting a reproduction of Mantle's facsimile signature (as is displayed on the actual card) this painting features the real thing. Mantle has beautifully signed his name ("9") in the white box along the base, adding the notation "No. 7" below his name. Mantle's 1952 Topps rookie card is the most significant postwar baseball card in the hobby and represents a holy grail for a legion of Mantle fans and collectors. This spectacular rendition brings that iconic image to full life and makes for an extraordinary signed Mantle display piece. Signed and dated (1990) by the artist in the lower right. Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Boxing Hall of Fame during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its induction programs. During that period he was also commissioned to produce a number of significant baseball artworks for a private collector. The offered piece is one of the very finest of those specially commissioned works. The painting measures 18 x 26.5 inches and has been decoratively framed to total dimensions of 20 x 29 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
